How to join the FRS

So you want to be a Firefighter?

Well, although there is no specific age limit most FRS's recruit people who are 18 or older. You'll also have to take a series of National Firefighter Ability (NFA) tests to make sure you're suitable, as well as a Personal Qualities and Attributes (PTA) test.

Test One - The written tests

Applicants must complete three written tests: a 45-minute maths test; a 30-minute test to assess how good you are at understanding information; and a 35-minute situational awareness and problem-solving test.

Test Two - The physical

Providing you pass the written tests you can then move on to the physical tests. These involve how you cope with being in a confined space, ladder carrying and lifting, assembling and carrying equipment and casualty evacuation. All while wearing the full Firefighter uniform.

Test Three - The interview

Finally, having passed the other stages you're invited in for an interview. This gives the FRS a chance to get to know you a bit better. The interview generally lasts for 45 minutes and questions can be about anything.
