Parents

Maybe you're looking for career ideas for your son or daughter or maybe you have some concerns about them joining the Fire & Rescue Service and want to know what it's really like.

This page aims to give you an overview of what the FRS has to offer and put your mind at rest.

The Fire & Rescue Service (FRS)

The Fire & Rescue Service is a diverse organisation whose roles include responding to emergencies – from fires to floods to car crashes and chemical spills. Another increasingly important role is to work within communities to prevent fires and accidents happening in the first place.

The work we do is incredibly important and we simply couldn't do it without the men and women that make up the FRS. We can offer your son or daughter a range of great career choices and plenty of opportunities to reach their full potential.

What we offer

The FRS is made up of many roles. These are split into two groups, Operational Staff and Non-operational Staff.

The Operational Staff are on the frontline. A trainee Firefighter salary starts at £21,157 and with the right training, experience and promotion can earn up to £53,934 (Area Manager level). And a Chief Fire Officer, which is at the top of the ladder, will receive a minimum of £94,000 annually.

The Non-operational Staff are based in various locations and perform many different roles. From Human Resources to Media Liaisons the work they do is just as important to the running of the FRS and the people we save. Salaries depend upon experience and area.

What's more, for individuals that display real talent we have a pilot Fast Track Scheme that, through an intensive course, can promote your child to Station Manager within four years.

Your child's future

Often the last thing on a young person's mind is their future. However, we understand that as a parent this is probably one of the first things on yours. We can guarantee plenty of career opportunities, as well as great pay and benefits, plus good pensions and regular fitness training.

The FRS takes care of its staff and makes sure they're well looked after on and off the job.
