From fires to floods
and beyond

Mention the Fire & Rescue Service and most people have an idea of what we do – usually the same one – 'They put fires out'. Now this isn't wrong, but putting fires out is just the beginning.

We're here to respond to all kinds of emergencies. From rescuing someone from a flood or responding to a terrorist attack, to cutting passengers out of cars and dealing with the aftermath of a traffic accident – the FRS is always there, working together to save lives.

Another large part of our role is to help prevent fires and accidents from happening in the first place. This involves working in the community, talking to people, listening to concerns, and ultimately teaching adults and children how to be safe in an emergency.

Our advice ranges from the dangers of playing with matches to the importance of having a working smoke alarm and much more. We teach people how to keep themselves safe by preventing an emergency and how to be safe should an emergency happen.

We also inspect buildings to make sure they're fire safe and investigate the reasons why fires started, sometimes working with the police when it looks like arson. It's an incredibly varied career, made up of people from all walks of life that work as a team to get the job done.
