What's involved?

A common misconception is that only big, burly men can be Firefighters – because you need to be super strong.

Well, that's not true. Fitness is important for the day-to-day challenges you might face, and you will need to be able to lift certain bits of equipment on your own. But there are many other skills that we look for too.

The skills you'll need:

  • Good at communicating
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Composure
  • Patience and understanding
  • Attention to detail

How you'll use them:

  • Helping people in distress
  • Dealing with emergencies as part of a team
  • Staying calm under high pressure situations
  • Educating people of all ages and backgrounds about safety
  • Looking after the equipment and vehicles

You will also have to be able to adjust to working at different times of the day. The hours you work depend on your role, but as a Firefighter you will usually work in shifts – most firefighters work two days followed by two night shifts then four days off.
